How to take control of Windows 10 Updates

Win10 Update annoyanceOne of the problems that Windows 10 users face is the update process. Updates are important but, as we have seen in the past, they can go terribly wrong. Experienced users used to set their Windows Update to ‘check for updates but don’t automatically install them’. Microsoft has made this hard to do if not impossible for most users – but there is a way to delay the updates on any computer.

It isn’t elegant – in other words, why not give us the option to delay the updates until we want to install them? – but it does work. Provided you connect to the internet via WiFi.

Here’s how to do it. Continue reading

Are desktops and notebooks doomed?

There are many people – me included – who feel very comfortable using desktop or notebook computers (laptops to use the old term), but if you were to believe all the hype from the press and sellers of computing devices in general, you’d think we are all moving to tablets.

Don’t get me wrong – there’s no doubt that for many tasks like quickly checking emails, browsing the ‘net, watching YouTube videos, playing games or keeping up with news – a tablet like an iPad or Android device is fantastic. The convenience of a light, fast booting touch screen tablet can’t be faulted and for many travellers, it beats a notebook hands down especially when you consider the much longer battery life. Case Study : Setting up a Home Server

Freenas ServerStoring and sharing media or backing up important data is often best done by means of a dedicated server accessible by your home network – this is commonly called a NAS or Network Attached Storage device.

Many people believe that networks only apply to businesses, but if you have more than 2 computing devices, which can be a computer, notebook, tablet or smartphone, then you already have the beginnings of a network at home. Advantages of setting up a home network server are sharing data among users, backing up important files like photos and documents and also making your music collection playable on any connected device. Case Study : Setting up a home VOIP system

VOIP CallDid you know that you can save a lot of money on your monthly phone bills by making more use of your broadband connection?

Most people have a fast enough internet connection these days and a typical 5 minute call only uses around 5Mb of data so that shouldn’t be an issue either.

Sounds complex, but it needn’t be – with most VOIP providers, the setup is very straightforward and most pre-configure the box they supply for you so it’s often just a matter of ‘plug it all together and start making calls’.

Let’s look at a real world example and discover the costs involved to set it up and begin saving money. Continue reading

A Teenager-Proof PC?

by Andy Turner
Coastal Computers & Design

I’ve been there – brought up two teenage sons through the (admittedly early) computer years and had the same frustrations with them mucking up the family computer. Reading them the riot act about ‘not going to those kind of websites or else’ etc worked for a while, but they soon get into the sneaky stage where they’ll look you in the eye and say “NO Dad, I didn’t do that – honest” Yeah sure. I must have left my tools out in the rain too… Continue reading
